Education
ECSS invites all members of the complex systems community to contribute to making and delivering a set of high-quality courses in complex systems science.
Some courses will be residential and some will be web-based. If you have ideas about potential courses please contact us with your suggestions. If you have materials that we can use for courses, such as simulations, data, course notes, Power-Point presentations, images, videos, etc we will be very pleased to hear from you.
Residential courses are available on application in response to calls made on this web site. Web-delivered courses will be available to anyone at no cost. We hope that feedback from the community will improve our courses and make them more useful.
Core Curriculum in Complex Systems Science Education: Call for Proposals
ONCE-CS Online Courses
ONCE-CS Educational Courses are now available. These can be found on the Open University of Complex Systems website.
EPSRC Courses in Complex Systems Science
The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) in UK is funding a number of courses for interested researchers that are new to complexity science and complex systems. The courses are running in 2006. For more information follow the link: EPSRC Courses on Complex Systems
ONCE-CS was involved specifically with a couple of taught courses organised by the Open University and Warwick University on Mathematics for the Science of Complex Systems. Follow the link for information and materials.
ONCE-CS Thematic Schools
ONCE-CS has delivered a number of thematic schools in complex systems science and plans another one in Warsaw (See Thematic schools objectives):
- Summer School on Complex Systems at Les Houches, 3-28 July 2006. The Scientific Directors were Jean-Philippe Bouchaud CEA Saclay, Paris) and Marc Mezard (Universite Paris Sud). http://w3houches.ujf-grenoble.fr/sessions_ete/ete-85/session-85.html
- Genopole thematic school on Biological Networks, April 30-May 11 2007. The school was led by Francois Kepes of Genopole at Evry. http://epigenomique.free.fr/en/index.php
- Beijing Summer School on Complexity Science and Real-World Applications, 11th-22nd September 2007 at Tsinghua University and Renmin University in Beijing.http://physics.ruc.edu.cn/complexity-BJ07/index.htm
European PhD in Complex Systems organised by ONCE-CS
A group led by Marcel Ausloos of the Université de Liège, Mario Rasetti of ISI in Torino and Jeff Johnson at the Open university is working towards a European PhD in complex Systems. It is hoped that Universities across Europe will be able to agree a common set of standards to award PhD degrees with this classification.
Funding from Exystence, GIACS and ONCE-CS was used for the coordination of complexity schools for European PhD Students. Follow the links to learn more and download abstracts and presentations where available.
- First European PhD School, April 10-14, 2007: Agent-Based Studies of Social, Economic and Industrial Systems
- Second European PhD School, November 22-27, 2007: Stochastic Effects in Differential Nonlinear Models - From Neutrality in Evolution to Efficiency in Markets
- Third European PhD School, February 4-8, 2008: Evolution in biological systems from molecules to life and language
- Summer School, December 4-8, 2007: Physical constrained electricity markets as complex systems
- First triangular Eu-India-China Summer School, June 25 - July 1, 2007: Aspects of complexity in computational neuroscience
ONCE-CS Web-based course: Simulation in the Science of Complex Systems.
This web based course is based on the Exystence course "Complexity in Real-World Systems & Their Simulations" held in Turin, ISI Foundation on March 2006. This can be found at the Open University of Complex Systems website, go to: Lectures on simulation
